What Are Allergies

What Are Allergies

Our body has a unique way to tell us that it does not want what it is exposed to. Medline Plus defines allergy as a reaction by your immune system to something that it is not comfortable with. Although several factors can trigger it, effects of allergies vary from one people to another. In fact, you may be allergic to something that others are not. Common allergens, those that can trigger an allergic reaction, are as follows:

  • Dust
  • Mold spore
  • Food
  • Insect stings
  • Pollen
  • Medicine
  • Pet dander

Types Of Allergies

Types Of Allergies

Allergies may manifest in different forms. However, the classification of the types of allergies is based on what causes it. Below are the most common types of allergies:

  • Food Allergy – according to Allergy UK, 4% of adults suffer from this type. Surprisingly, some of us may not know that we are allergic to a certain food until we have tried it.
  • Dust Allergy – this type of allergy manifests through sneezing, difficulty in breathing and other respiratory symptoms.
  • Pet Allergies – no offense to dog and cat users but pets are also a major contributor of allergens. Usually, people who are allergic to feathers or hairs of animals experience watery eyes and sneezing.
  • Medicine Allergy – physicians are always very cautious in giving patients medicine as it can trigger an allergic reaction. Symptoms of medicine allergy include skin rash, hives, and difficulty of breathing.
  • Mold Allergy – if you think that your bathroom and kitchen are clean, think again. Molds can grow in every corner of your home and may cause severe allergic reactions.

Most of these reactions are not too serious to merit a visit to a doctor. In fact, drinking over the counter antihistamines can be an immediate solution. However, there are severe allergic reactions that can lead to death.

Getting Rid Of Allergies

Sad to say, there is no permanent cure for any allergy. However, you can still do something to minimize its effects. For example, in my case, I’m allergic to both dust and pollen of some flowers. I used to go a nearby hospital every time I had an allergic attack. Good thing I was able to minimize allergic reaction by doing the following:

Avoid Allergens

If you were hit by an allergic reaction before, then you may have to know what causes it. Therefore, the very first thing that you can do is avoid long exposure to such allergens. As Pollen suggests, this is the easiest and the simplest thing that you can do. For example, if you know that you’re allergic to peanuts, then stop eating them. In the same way, if you’re allergic to cats, then stay away from these pets.

On the other hand, there are cases wherein staying away from allergens is almost impossible. It’s the case of pollen allergy. Since they are airborne and very small, it is virtually impossible to stay away from it. However, you may transfer to known pollen-free areas to minimize the possibility of exposure. In addition, you may need to update yourself with the latest weather forecast. It can give you valuable information like wind direction that can help you avoid exposure to pollens.

Have A Healthy Diet

Have A Healthy Diet

Overhauling your diet to help minimize the effects of allergies is not a bad idea. In fact, Health Essentials explains that strengthening your immune system is like building a formidable wall that can protect you. Once your immune system is strong, your body’s capacity fight allergens also increase. Some foods are known to help fight allergies include:

  • Onions
  • Kiwi
  • Pineapple
  • Tuna
  • Kefir
  • Raw Honey

As a rule of thumb, always consume any food in moderation. Although they are proven to help fight allergies, they can be counter-productive when abused. In addition, see to it that you’re not allergic to any of the above foods. Should allergy symptoms manifest, stop eating immediately and see your doctor?

Keep Your Windows Closed

It’s good to have a well-ventilated room. However, people allergic to pollen will prefer to close the windows no matter how gorgeous the day is in first place. Air is a major medium in the proliferation of pollen. Hence, if you don’t want to sneeze the whole day, better shut that window. Web MD also recommends installing High-Efficiency Particulate Air or HEPA filter on your air conditioning system. It screens the air going inside your house to avoid pollens from coming in. Furthermore, it can also trap dust mites, pet dander, tobacco smoke and other common household allergens.

Drink Red Onion Water

Drink Red Onion Water

Did you know that onion is not just for sauteing purposes? According to Everyday Roots, red onion water is a potent solution for allergies. Apparently, it contains a water soluble chemical called quercetin. It works in your body by reducing the amount of histamine in your system. As a result, it also reduces the symptoms of allergies. Aside from this, it is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties. More importantly, it also acts as a bronchodilator that opens up air passages to help you breathe easily.

Preparing Red Onion Water:

  • Medium sized red onion
  • 4 cups of water
  • Organic raw honey
  • First, slice the red onion into thin rings.
  • Then, pour 4 cups of water into a glass with cover and add the sliced onions.
  • Next, allow the mixture to infuse for 8-12 hours.
  • Finally, add honey to taste and refrigerate.

I personally drink red onion water twice every day – in the morning and before bed at night. This preparation can last up to 4 days if refrigerated. It is best to discard the old onions and cut fresh slices for another batch.

Apple – Walnut Snack

Did I mention to eat foods that help fight allergies? Apparently, apples and walnuts are some of these foods too. If you’re into hiking trails with a possibility of getting exposed, this mix will serve as your shield. According to Authority Nutrition, walnuts are high in magnesium that helps ease the effects of allergens. In addition, its vitamin E helps boost your immune system.

On the other hand, apple has quercetin just like red onions. It naturally reduces the production of histamine. Hence, you will experience lesser symptoms as well. Combining apple and walnuts will result in a sumptuous, anti-allergy snack that you must try.

  • First, cut a medium apple into bite sizes. Be sure to remove the core and seeds.
  • Then, coarsely chop 1 cup of walnuts.
  • Next, place them all together in a ziplock and mix.
  • Finally, feel free to toss in some dried cherries and sunflower seeds for more variety.

In lieu of walnuts, you can use pecans instead. Prepare this snack the night before you hike. It can last until the following night or until you’ve reached your camp.

Drink Lots Of Water

Drink Lots Of Water

It is a known fact that water saves life. In fact, it keeps you hydrated and diminishes your appetite if you’re trying to lose weight. It may sound ridiculous to you, but drinking water helps reduce the effects of allergies. According to Water Benefits Health, drinking plenty of water suppresses the production of histamine. As we all know by now, the lesser histamine in your body, the less likely you are to experience allergic symptoms.

Drinking clean water is already enough to help minimize allergy symptoms. However, if you want to go a step further, you may want to try ionized water. It is similar to tap water. However, it is a restructured or micro-clustered version. Meaning, the molecules that make up the water are now in smaller groupings. As a result, your body can easily absorb it as well as all the elements that come with it.

We always want to achieve a healthy life. Hence, we exert our best to be in our most optimum condition. However, allergens are simply everywhere to a point that we almost can’t hide from them. And since it is impossible for us to avoid them, the least that we can do is to take precautionary measure to diminish their effects.
